A Capella Ensemble of NY (updated
5/9/2008)
VAN
Choir Directory listing*** Rehearsals: Friday *** Rehearsal neighborhood: Chinatown
Wanted: 1 bass to be paid $60 for May 31 concert and at least 2 rehearsals (must be below 24 years old with good reading skills).
No membership dues. An a cappella choir whose goal is to be like the Orpheus Orchestra--perform with NO CONDUCTOR. AKA NY Madrigal Ensemble, LLC. Present members, some of whom are choir directors, are semi-professional musically-trained singers who, inspired by past participation in their college Madrigal group (with NO conductor) want to continue that tradition. Their ex-college Madrigal group still exists and has been winning major choral competitions in Europe including the Le Grand Prix Choral Competition in Tours, France in 1997.
We sing in SBAT quartets and semi-circle formation. This allows us to hear each other well, be in-sync and blend our voices easily. Most importantly, in this formation one experiences the greatest joy from the songs as one hears all the voice parts equally in a blended sound. We want to have at least a double-octet. We aim to improve our quality, perform concerts twice a year with great artistry and gain a good reputation to sing in weddings/receptions for a fee to be split evenly among singers. Rehearsals Friday nights in Chinatown. Basic sight-reading skills and fairly straight tone or fast-fine vibrato needed. Send e-mail edsantayana@yahoo.com or call 212-824-6923.

Music Divine (updated
4/14/2008)
VAN
Choir Directory listing*** Rehearsals: Sunday *** Rehearsal neighborhood: Greenwich Village
Sunday, April 27, is the last chance to audition for Music Divine's June 22 concert, which will reprise last spring's "War & Peace" program for our new downtown audience. We are in greatest need of middle range voices: a TENOR, and another ALTO or COUNTERTENOR. We would also gladly hear a bass; but we have already found the soprano we needed. Auditions are integrated into rehearsals, which are held Sunday evenings in the acoustically outstanding St. Joseph's Church.
Our first concert, in November 2005, paired masses by Josquin and Isaac based on the chanson Une mousse de Biscaye. In April 2006 we performed Lamentations by Lassus; the St. John Passion by his best student, Leonhard Lechner; Holy Week motets by Victoria; and Lotti's 8-voice Crucifixus. In October we presented some of Heinrich Isaac's greatest work. In December we performed two concerts of Christmas music centered around Josquin's motet Praeter rerum seriem, and works inspired by it: Rore's 7-voice mass, and a Magnificat by Lassus.
Last spring we presented, "War and Peace," first on the Upper West Side, then at the Boston Early Music Festival in June. It featured works by Josquin, La Rue and Ramsey based on the biblical quote "How the mighty are fallen"; Janequin's La Guerre and a chanson celebrating peace; several versions of Da Pacem; settings by Isaac and Palestrina of the liturgy for the Votive Mass for Peace, and J.S. Bach's 'motet' "Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg" from the middle of his Cantata #4.
For the NY Early Music Celebration last fall, we presented the best of Josquin and Isaac. In our most recent concert, this March, we performed Salve Regina settings by Obrecht, Martini, Morales and Victoria, interspersed with motets by Ockeghem.
For choral music, our members sing without any audible vibrato, they blend smoothly with each other, and they are excellent sight-readers. We base our intonation on the pure harmonic series interval of the perfect fifth, the way orchestral strings tune. This means we avoid the equal temperament of the piano, which requires an ever-so-slightly diminished fifth instead. Our system creates harmonies and melodies with slightly wider major intervals and narrower minor ones than most singers are used to producing. The sound, we believe, is the most beautiful realization of polyphonic music composed in the Renaissance, and in most other periods as well.
Steve Bonime, the director of Music Divine, has conducted The Renaissance Choir of Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges, which he co-founded with Alex Blachly in 1963, The Vassar Madrigal Singers, The Renaissance Chorus of New York, The Canby Singers, Polyhymnia, and the New York Madrigal Singers. In all of them, and in many other choruses, he has also sung tenor and countertenor. Please address all requests and inquiries to him at steverica@juno.com (with "Music Divine" as the subject).

Polyhymnia (updated

VAN
Choir Directory listing*** Rehearsals: Wednesday *** Rehearsal neighborhood: Upper West Side
Polyhymnia, one of New York's most exciting early music vocal ensembles, has immediate tenor positions open for the remainder of our 2008 season. Our remaining concert is the music of Pierre de Manchicourt, chapel master to Philip II of Spain and one of the most accomplished but least known of the Franco-Flemish school. This position is for our May 17, 2008 concert, but has the possibility of an extension to next season.
Polyhymnia is a small 8-12 voice ensemble specializing in mostly sacred repertoire from the late Middle-ages to the early Baroque, performing both a cappella and with area period instrumental ensembles. The singers of Polyhymnia are advanced amateur and professional singers, and honoraria are occasionally paid. All singers must have strong sight-reading skills, and have a working knowledge of early music vocal technique; voices with vibrato well under control combined with the ability and desire to blend with other singers. Singers must also have the ability to sing one on a part if needed, but should primarily enjoy the experience of sharing a part with one other singer. Experience in a small ensemble is a must.
On September 8, 2003, Polyhymnia was named ensemble-in-residence at the Church of Saint Ignatius of Antioch (Episcopal) where we rehearse and usually perform our three New York concerts. We will occasionally perform in other venues during the season, some of which may require weekend travel, past gigs have included the Boston Early Music Festival and Music at Park Place in Providence, RI. For more info about the audition, contact director John Bradley at 917-838-4636 or e-mail info@polyhymnia-nyc.org, please indicate audition in the subject line.

The principal roles are filled and are strong, as is the women's ensemble--all we need is "a few good men" to balance things out. There is virtually no dancing involved, and what little there is is extremely simple. We just need a couple of men who want to sing and have a good time. We're a very easygoing, fun company that's been around for over a half-century; come on down and join us. Call 631-567-8264 for more information.

At 68, the Parkchester Chorus is the oldest ecumenical chorus in the Bronx. Our director for more than 25 years is Lorraine C. Nanko. Ms. Nanko, as she is known by her students at Cardinal Hayes High School, where she is the director of the Arts Department, brings a tremendous variety of music from the classics, to Broadway, religious classic to folk and all in-between. We are a mixed group – all ages and all kinds of people. Currently, we are 21 members, and accept new members twice a year, just after Labor Day and the second week in January. Our rehearsal year includes two semesters and two concerts, the second Sunday of December and the Third Sunday in May. Clearly the December concert revolves around the December holiday, while the Spring program is a musical surprise! One year we celebrated Gilbert & Sullivan, another Rodgers & Hammerstein. The 2008 spring program presents tributes to Les Miserables, and celebrates anniversaries of Handel, Vivaldi, Vincent Youmans, Leroy Anderson and others. We especially enjoy our outreach programs where we can bring beautiful music to those less able to travel to concerts. The group has a monthly coffee hour where members perform for each-other and the Parkchester Chorus celebrates each semester concert with a party. Members range in age from early twenties to sixties. We rehearse Tuesdays, 8 to 10 PM at our musical home, The First Lutheran Church of Throggs Neck, 3075 Baisley Avenue, Bronx, New York 10461. We belong to the Bronx Council on the Arts. Each member pays $30 per semester. To become a member, some choral experience is preferable. For more information refer to the website or call 718-320-2790 and leave a message.

A critically acclaimed chorus of 70 voices, the Westchester Chorale welcomes skilled choral singers in all voice parts to join us for the spring 2008 concert season, culminating in a performance of G.F. Handel’s great choral epic Israel in Egypt with professional soloists and orchestra.
Interested singers are invited to a series of open rehearsals and auditions on four Tuesday evenings—January 8, 15, 22 and 29—at 7:45 PM. Rehearsals are held at Greenville Community Church (Hessler Hall), 270 Ardsley Road, Scarsdale, New York. We will welcome you to sit in and sing with us, to experience the musical rewards and congenial atmosphere of our rehearsals. For more information about our auditions, membership and repertory, and to hear excerpts of our recent concerts, please visit our website at www.westchesterchorale.org or call (914) 725-7507.
The Westchester Chorale presents several major musical events each concert season, ranging from its two principal concerts in December and May to its annual August Sings! and Messiah Sing programs. Daniel Paget, whose work has been praised by The New York Times, has served as Music Director since 1984. Under his leadership, the Chorale has taken a wide-ranging approach to repertory, shedding new light on major works of the choral-orchestral literature as well as introducing audiences to rarely-heard music. The Chorale performs with vocal soloists and instrumentalists of the finest caliber.
The Westchester Chorale’s auditioned chamber ensemble, Capriol, performs madrigals, motets and other exemplars of the small ensemble repertory, both in concert with the Chorale and individually in smaller venues. Recent performances have provided opportunities for Chorale members to perform music from the 17th through 20th centuries in small ensembles.
