Melodia Women’s Choir of NYC proudly presents "Global Echoes," a live concert set for Sunday, April 26, 2026 at 4:00 PM EDT at the historic Church of the Holy Apostles in New York City. This springtime musical event promises an emotionally rich and stylistically diverse choral experience that bridges classical repertoire with global folk traditions, illuminating the extraordinary range and color of the women’s choral voice.
Under the direction of Artistic Director Cynthia Powell, Melodia will showcase a thoughtfully-curated program that highlights not only the expressive power of women’s voices, but also the ensemble’s ability to move fluidly across musical languages. What makes "Global Echoes" particularly distinctive is its focus on contrast and connection: ancient and contemporary sounds placed side by side, folk traditions reimagined through modern choral textures, and classical works infused with an immediacy that feels strikingly current.
The program’s uniqueness lies in its sonic palette. Audiences will hear shimmering upper-register harmonies, earthy folk-inspired rhythms and moments of striking stillness, all brought to life through nuanced vocal color and inventive instrumental collaboration. Featured performers include Janet Sora Chung on piano and organ, supported by string quartet, harp and percussion -- an ensemble that expands the choir’s sound world, adding both delicacy and dramatic weight.
Director and Conductor Cynthia Powell states, “With 'Global Echoes,' we wanted to create a musical experience that feels like renewal itself -- fresh, expansive and full of possibility. This program moves across cultures and centuries, yet every piece speaks to something deeply human and immediate.”
Among the program’s highlights are two works by Elmir Nizamov, Umirzaya (Snowdrop) and Molitva (Prayer), which offer a compelling glimpse into contemporary choral writing from the Republic of Tatarstan. Umirzaya unfolds with a quiet, almost crystalline beauty, its delicate melodic lines evoking the fragile emergence of new life after winter. In contrast, Molitva builds from hushed reverence to soaring intensity, layering voices in a way that creates a sense of communal breath and spiritual urgency. Together, these works exemplify the program’s central theme of renewal and reflection.
The concert also explores the transformation of folk music through choral arrangement. The Indonesian song Dago Inang Sarge pulses with rhythmic vitality, driven by percussive energy and interlocking vocal lines that create a sense of joyful propulsion. Meanwhile, the beloved Japanese melody Sakura is rendered with luminous simplicity, its pentatonic contours and gentle harmonies evoking both the fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms and a deep sense of cultural memory. These arrangements highlight how traditional melodies can take on new dimensions through choral interpretation.
Western classical repertoire is equally reimagined. Franz Schubert’s Du bist die Ruh appears in a choral setting that preserves its intimate lyricism while expanding its emotional resonance through layered harmony. The result is both tender and enveloping, inviting listeners into a shared space of stillness and warmth. Similarly, The Parting Glass, a traditional farewell song, is presented with a sense of communal storytelling -- its simple melody gradually enriched by harmonic depth, allowing the choir to explore themes of gratitude, departure and connection.
Sacred works provide some of the program’s most transcendent moments. Eleanor Daley’s Canticle to the Spirit shimmers with ethereal textures, its flowing lines and luminous harmonies creating an atmosphere of uplift and serenity. Jessica French’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis offers a more dramatic arc, juxtaposing exuberant declarations with moments of introspection. The interplay between voices and instruments in these pieces underscores the choir’s versatility and expressive range.
"Global Echoes" is carefully shaped to balance introspection and vitality, weaving together moments of quiet reflection with passages of rhythmic energy and brightness. Throughout the program, audiences can expect an emphasis on textual clarity, expressive phrasing and a deep sensitivity to the cultural origins of each work. The result is a concert experience that feels both expansive and cohesive -- an exploration of global sound that remains grounded in shared human emotion.
Powell shares, “This program celebrates the beauty, strength and expressive power of women’s voices, and we hope audiences leave feeling refreshed, connected and inspired.”
